Spear Head Spade 40" with D-grip Model SHFD3
Spear Head Spade SHFD3, 40 inch garden spade shovel
- Built for comfort and control: a 40 in garden spade shovel with a 9 x 11 in beveled blade for digging holes, tough soil and roots, planting, dividing perennials and transplanting shrubs
- Steel-reinforced fiberglass handle: lightweight, with a cushioned, UV-resistant D-grip; about 3.5 lb
- Path of least resistance: the double-patented spearhead blade wedges its way around rocks in stony soil instead of hitting them and stopping
- Tempered carbon-manganese steel blade, 33% thicker and 25% harder than standard shovel stock
- Never needs sharpening: pre-sharpened at the factory to a 35 degree bevel, tip to tail, and the powder coat wears away gradually to keep exposing the factory edge; the more you use it, the sharper it gets
- Ergonomic advantage: wide, forward-bent foot rests on both sides give your boot a real platform, so your body weight does the digging
- The first hybrid spade and shovel: curved to carry soil, pointed and sharpened to cut
Why the point matters
A conventional garden spade meets the soil with its full width at once, so your effort spreads across the whole edge. A spearhead concentrates that same effort into one place. The blade penetrates first, then the sharpened edges slice outward as it sinks, cutting roots wherever they cross the edge instead of bouncing off them. In rocky ground the double-patented profile finds the path of least resistance and wedges its way around a stone instead of hitting it and stopping.
The steel
Tempered carbon-manganese steel, 33% thicker and 25% harder than standard shovel stock, beveled and sharpened tip to tail at a 35 degree angle. The powder coat is designed to wear away at the edges first, so ordinary digging keeps exposing sharpened steel. It never needs sharpening; the more you use it, the sharper it gets.
What it handles
Roots, from perennial mats to the woody roots you hit digging planting holes. Compacted clay, where the point starts a cut and the bevel wedges it open. Edging, with a crisp line and a clean face on beds and borders. Transplanting, where four or five presses around a shrub lift a tidy root ball. Digging pure sand with no rocks or roots is the one job where a standard round-head shovel is the better scoop.
