5 Bare Root Black Cohosh Plants Actaea racemosa Native Woodland Shade Perennial

Black Cohosh is a native woodland perennial known for its tall, elegant white flower spikes that rise above deep green foliage in early to midsummer. Its upright, architectural form and tolerance for shaded areas make it a striking addition to naturalized gardens, woodland borders, and pollinator-friendly landscapes.

This perennial works well as a background planting in shade gardens, where its tall wands of fuzzy white blooms create vertical interest and attract pollinators. The deeply cut foliage remains attractive throughout the season, turning yellow in autumn. Plants prefer consistent moisture and humus-rich soil, gradually forming larger clumps over time. It pairs well with ferns, hostas, and other shade-loving perennials.
