Hibiscus moscheutos, commonly called swamp rose mallow or crimson-eyed rosemallow, is a hardy herbaceous perennial native to North American wetlands and meadows. It is prized for its exceptionally large blooms, which can reach up to eight inches across, opening in shades of white, pink, or rose with a distinctive crimson center. This bold, tropical-looking flower brings dramatic vertical interest to temperate gardens and returns reliably each year from its woody crown.

In the landscape, swamp rose mallow works beautifully in rain gardens, pond margins, and moist borders, where its late-summer blooms feed pollinators and add late-season color. It pairs well with ornamental grasses, Joe-Pye weed, and ironweed. Stems rise upright and clump-forming, and the plant can be left standing for winter structure. Flowers open successively over a long period, and the foliage offers a soft, shrub-like texture throughout the growing season.
