Korean Lespedeza (Kummerowia stipulacea) is a fast-growing warm-season annual legume valued for its fine texture, low growth habit, and ability to establish quickly in open sunny areas. It produces small pinkish-purple pea-like flowers in late summer and has long been used as a dependable summer cover in pastures, meadows, and large open plantings. Its compact, sprawling form and quick germination make it a practical choice for erosion control on bare ground, temporary grazing, and low-maintenance green cover where a short-lived annual legume is wanted.
In the landscape, Korean Lespedeza works well as a summer annual ground cover, in wildlife food plots, and as a companion in pasture mixes. It tolerates poor, dry soils better than many legumes and will self-seed under favorable conditions, returning each year. Plants die back after frost. Sow by broadcasting onto a prepared, weed-free seedbed and lightly cover, as shallow planting supports better establishment. This species is grown for ornamental, forage, and soil-cover purposes, not as a perennial garden specimen.
