Blue Grama Grass (Bouteloua gracilis) is a warm-season perennial bunchgrass native to the prairies of North America. Its fine-textured green foliage and distinctive eyebrow-shaped seed heads create a soft, natural look in meadows, wildflower plantings, and low-water landscapes. This drought-tolerant grass is an excellent choice for xeriscaping, native plant gardens, and erosion control on sunny, dry sites.

Blue Grama Grass provides habitat and forage for wildlife and adds movement and texture to the garden. It can be used as a low-maintenance groundcover, in prairie restorations, or as an ornamental accent in borders and containers.

Planting & Care

Sow Blue Grama Grass seeds in late spring or early summer when soil temperatures are consistently warm. Scatter seeds on the soil surface and press them lightly into the top 1/8 inch of soil; do not bury deeply, as light aids germination. Keep the area evenly moist until seedlings emerge, then reduce watering as plants establish. Thin or space seedlings to allow good air circulation.

Once established, Blue Grama Grass is very low-maintenance and drought-tolerant. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep roots. Cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. This grass thrives in full sun and well-drained soil; avoid overwatering or poorly drained sites.
