10 Black Sage Salvia mellifera Seeds Native Aromatic Shrub Hardy Drought Tolerant

Black sage (Salvia mellifera) is a native evergreen shrub valued for its aromatic gray-green foliage and pale lavender to white flowers that appear in whorled clusters during spring and early summer. This hardy plant is appreciated by gardeners for its textured appearance, its value in native and drought-tolerant landscapes, and its ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies to the garden.

Black sage works well in water-wise borders, pollinator gardens, and native plantings, where its dense, mounding habit provides structure and visual interest throughout the year. The fragrant leaves release a pleasant scent when brushed or crushed. Beyond its ornamental use, the plant can serve as a low-maintenance backdrop for perennials and grasses, and its flowers offer seasonal color that complements other California-native species.
