Its glossy, heart-shaped leaves and trailing habit make it a useful choice for naturalizing difficult areas under trees, along woodland edges, and in native plant gardens where a durable, textural carpet is desired.
This vine spreads by rhizomes to create a soft green layer that works well as a groundcover, woodland garden component, or understory planting. It can be allowed to scramble over logs, rocks, and low structures for a naturalistic look, or kept contained in borders and native plantings. The foliage provides a quiet backdrop for perennials and woodland wildflowers while tolerating shade and average moisture once established.
Species: Smilax pumila
Type: Perennial vine / groundcover
Plant_Habit: Low, spreading, trailing
Sun: Partial shade to full shade
Soil: Average, well-drained, humus-rich
Zones: 7 to 10
Germination: Variable; cold-moist stratification can improve results
Sowing: Surface sow or barely cover; keep moist and warm after stratification
Spacing: 12 to 18 inches
Notes: Native woodland species; allow room to spread

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0717/4648/6408/files/download_00e3da44-6b5a-4c33-b7df-2ef463258034.png?v=1791896445
https://www.natesgardensupply.com/products/5-seeds-sarsaparilla-vine-smilax-pumila-native-groundcover-vine
