5-seeds-prosopis-pubescens-screwbean-mesquite-desert-tree
5 Seeds Prosopis pubescens Screwbean Mesquite Desert Tree

This is a pack of 5 seeds from the Prosopis pubescens, commonly known as the Screwbean Mesquite, a distinctive desert tree prized for its unusual, tightly coiled seedpods and delicate, feathery foliage. This slow-growing, multi-trunked tree adds an exotic silhouette and fine-textured green canopy to arid landscapes, thriving in hot, dry conditions where it provides light shade and a unique architectural focal point. Its curling pods also make a fascinating natural curiosity.
Ornamentally, this tree is ideal for xeriscapes, rock gardens, or as a specimen in warm, low-water landscapes, where its twisted beans and airy look offer visual interest throughout the growing season. As a culinary note, the sweet, edible pods were traditionally harvested for food, though the tree is primarily grown for its striking appearance. It exhibits a shrubby to tree-like growth habit with arching branches, and it is adapted to poor, well-drained soils once established. Use it to create a natural desert ambiance or as a habitat plant for local wildlife in suitable climates.
Species: Prosopis pubescens
Variety: Screwbean Mesquite
Type: Seed
Plant_Habit: Deciduous tree or large shrub
Sun: Full sun
Soil: Well-drained, sandy or gravelly; drought tolerant once established
Days_to_Harvest: Not applicable
Zones: 7-10
Germination: Nick or scarify seed; soak in hot water for 24 hours before sowing; germination in 2-6 weeks
Sowing: Sow 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix; keep warm and evenly moist
Spacing: Plant 15-20 feet apart
Notes: Frost hardy; tolerates alkaline soils; produces coiled pods in summer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0717/4648/6408/files/download_7bc2ff6b-7544-4a7b-b29c-179ef2d24017.png?v=1791895528
