It brings a bold, architectural presence to shaded garden beds and damp, woodland-style plantings, where its tropical-looking leaves add dramatic texture and structure. This slow-growing species is prized by native plant enthusiasts for its distinctive appearance and its role in naturalistic landscapes.

In cultivation, Devils Club performs best in consistently moist, humus-rich soil and dappled shade, mimicking its native understory habitat. It works well as a specimen or background plant in woodland gardens, rain gardens, and shaded borders, where its height and bold foliage create a strong vertical accent. The plant spreads gradually by rhizomes, forming attractive colonies over time in suitable conditions.
Species: Oplopanax horridus
Variety: Not applicable
Type: Perennial shrub
Plant_Habit: Upright, clump-forming, spreading by rhizomes
Sun: Partial shade to full shade
Soil: Moist, humus-rich, well-drained woodland soil
Days_to_Harvest: Not applicable
Zones: 4-8
Germination: Requires cold stratification; slow and often irregular
Sowing: Sow on the surface, lightly press into moist medium, keep cool and humid
Spacing: 3-5 feet apart
Notes: Best in shaded, consistently moist sites; protect from intense sun and dry conditions

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0717/4648/6408/files/download_1f957ad8-a76a-455d-96e1-e4bfbd2add22.png?v=1791896894
https://www.natesgardensupply.com/products/5-seeds-devils-club-oplopanax-horridus-native-woodland-shrub
