As a live starter plant, it brings year-round structure and texture to containers, herb gardens, and sunny patios, and it can be trained into topiary or a small standard over time.

The leathery leaves are the classic culinary bay leaf, commonly added whole to soups, stews, and sauces to layer in a warm, herbal aroma during long cooking. This slow-growing, woody plant performs best in bright light with well-drained soil and consistent moisture, and it responds well to light pruning to maintain a compact shape.
