Its most striking feature appears later in the season when the fluffy, silvery seed heads develop, creating a distinctive feathery display that persists into winter and gives the plant its descriptive common names. This is a robust climber well suited to covering fences, pergolas, and walls where a fast-establishing, textural ornamental is desired.

The plant is primarily grown for its ornamental value, offering seasonal interest from flowering through to its decorative seed heads. It works well as a backdrop in mixed borders and naturalistic plantings, and the airy seed heads are popular for dried floral arrangements. Clematis vitalba is a vigorous grower that can quickly cover large structures, so give it space and a sturdy support. Light pruning helps keep growth tidy and encourages abundant flowering.
Species: Clematis vitalba
Type: Deciduous climbing vine
Plant Habit: Vigorous, twining climber
Sun: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Moist, well-drained soil
Zones: 4-9
Germination: Cold stratification recommended; sow 1-3 mm deep
Sowing: Surface sow and keep moist; germination can be slow and irregular
Spacing: 1.5-3 m apart
Notes: Provide a sturdy support; prune lightly to manage vigorous growth

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0717/4648/6408/files/download_ab8cc0e1-5b7b-4fa8-b814-458bcbbafd2f.png?v=1791898035
https://www.natesgardensupply.com/products/30-seeds-clematis-vitalba-travellers-joy-old-mans-beard-climbing-vine
