It produces large, spiny stems topped with huge bi-pinnate leaves that can reach several feet long, creating a dramatic specimen for naturalized areas, woodland edges, and wildlife gardens. In late summer, broad flat clusters of tiny white flowers appear, followed by dark berries that draw birds and pollinators. This southeastern U.S. native brings strong vertical interest and a distinctive silhouette to temperate landscapes. Devil's Walkingstick works well as a back-of-border accent, a thicket-forming screen, or a statement plant in a pollinator or native garden. Its sizable leaves cast light shade beneath, while the prickly trunks add texture and deter browsing animals. Plants prefer rich, moist, well-drained soil and tolerate part shade to full sun. Flowers and fruit develop on mature wood, and suckering slowly expands the colony over time.
Species: Aralia spinosa
Type: Deciduous shrub or small tree
Plant_Habit: Upright, suckering, spiny stems
Sun: Full sun to part shade
Soil: Rich, moist, well-drained
Zones: 4 to 9
Germination: Cold-moist stratify 60 to 90 days, then sow at 65 to 75F
Sowing: Surface sow and press lightly, light aids germination
Spacing: 6 to 10 feet apart
Notes: Slow to establish, thrives in woodland and naturalized settings

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0717/4648/6408/files/download_8a407cd5-9bb8-4903-b662-e574b9513b3e.png?v=1791898115
https://www.natesgardensupply.com/products/200-seeds-aralia-spinosa-devils-walkingstick-native-tree-seeds-for-planting
