It forms dense, spreading colonies in shaded gardens, making it an excellent choice for naturalizing under trees or in woodland borders, and in spring it produces clusters of small, bell-shaped, white to pale violet flowers that attract early-season pollinators.
In the garden, Virginia Waterleaf works well as a groundcover in shade gardens, native plant landscapes, and pollinator-friendly areas. Its lush foliage provides a soft texture among other woodland plants, and it pairs nicely with ferns, hostas, and wild ginger. The plants emerge in early spring, bloom in late spring to early summer, and may go dormant in mid-summer if soils dry out, returning the following spring. It can be grown from seed or transplanted as root divisions.
Species: Hydrophyllum virginianum
Type: Herbaceous perennial
Plant_Habit: Spreading, clump-forming groundcover
Sun: Part shade to full shade
Soil: Moist, well-drained, rich in organic matter
Days_to_Harvest: Not applicable
Zones: 3-8
Germination: Cold moist stratification recommended; sow seeds in fall or stratify for 60-90 days
Sowing: Surface sow or cover lightly; keep moist
Spacing: 12-18 inches
Notes: Seeds require moisture and cool temperatures for best germination; allow seed heads to dry on plants for self-sowing

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0717/4648/6408/files/il_fullxfull.7922378235_mpas_0b0b9587-d6a1-43c0-9a29-fa41f76c3475.jpg?v=1791899780
https://www.natesgardensupply.com/products/10-seeds-virginia-waterleaf-hydrophyllum-virginianum-native-woodland-shade-perennial
