It forms large, spreading clumps of flat, fleshy pads that are blue-green in color and can grow quite tall over time. This species is valued by gardeners for its striking architectural presence, its tolerance of extreme heat, and its ability to thrive in arid, low-water landscapes. It is an excellent choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, or as a bold specimen plant in a sunny border.
In addition to its ornamental value, Engelmann's prickly pear produces bright yellow to orange flowers in late spring, followed by edible, sweet fruits often called tuna. The young pads, known as nopales, are also edible after careful preparation. This cactus is fast-growing under the right conditions and can be used to create natural barriers or wildlife-friendly plantings. The seeds offered here are a rewarding way to propagate this resilient species, though patience is required as germination can be slow.
Species: Opuntia engelmannii
Variety: Engelmann's Prickly Pear
Type: Perennial cactus
Plant_Habit: Upright, clump-forming
Sun: Full sun
Soil: Well-draining, sandy or rocky
Days_to_Harvest: Not applicable
Zones: 8-11
Germination: 4-12 weeks
Sowing: Surface sow, press into soil, keep lightly moist
Spacing: 36-60 inches
Notes: Drought tolerant once established

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0717/4648/6408/files/download_dca6f332-2762-41ca-8632-2068d5534e39.png?v=1791896074
https://www.natesgardensupply.com/products/10-seeds-opuntia-engelmannii-engelmanns-prickly-pear-hardy-desert-cactus-pad-producing
