Its compact, multi-stemmed habit and attractive fall color make it a useful choice for shrub borders, wildlife gardens, and naturalized landscape plantings. The berries are notably high in antioxidants and are commonly used in jams, jellies, juices, and baked goods once fully ripe; they are tart and astringent when eaten fresh.
Aronia melanocarpa adapts well to a range of soil and moisture conditions and typically produces fruit within two to three years of establishment. It can be used as a fruiting hedge, a pollinator-friendly accent, or a mass planting for erosion-prone areas. The shrub spreads slowly by suckers, forming a dense colony over time, and the fruit persists into late summer for harvest or wildlife use.
Species: Aronia melanocarpa
Variety: Black Chokeberry
Type: Deciduous shrub
Plant_Habit: Upright, multi-stemmed, spreading by suckers
Sun: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Average, medium to wet, well-drained; tolerates a range of pH
Days_to_Harvest: Fruit ripens late summer to early fall
Zones: 3 to 8
Germination: Not applicable
Sowing: Not applicable
Spacing: 3 to 5 feet apart
Notes: Ships as a 12-24 inch bare root plant; keep roots moist before planting

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0717/4648/6408/files/download_456232ec-e0e9-4514-b56a-e09c345bab80.png?v=1791897433
https://www.natesgardensupply.com/products/1-live-plant-black-chokeberry-aronia-melanocarpa-12-bare-root
